GST registration
New registration, amendment, additional place of business, cancellation and revocation, including replies to clarification requests and physical verification.
T K Chandy & Associates are GST consultants in Kochi who handle the full GST cycle for Kerala businesses: registration, monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, input tax credit reconciliation with GSTR-2B and IMS, the GSTR-9/9C annual return (FY 2025-26 due 31 December 2026), e-invoicing, refunds, and replies to notices, appeals and GSTAT.

At a glance
Goods and Services Tax touches every invoice you raise and every bill you pay. Since GST 2.0 took effect on 22 September 2025, most goods and services fall into two main rates, 5% and 18%, with a 40% rate for luxury and sin goods. The rate structure is simpler, but the compliance is stricter: credit depends on what your suppliers report, returns lock once filed, and the department now issues data-driven notices within months.
As GST consultants in Kochi, the chartered accountants at T K Chandy & Associates in Kakkanad look after GST for traders, manufacturers, exporters, IT and service companies, hospitals, builders and NGOs across Ernakulam and Kerala. We file your returns, reconcile your credit, keep your annual return consistent with your audited accounts, and represent you when the department asks questions. For recent changes, see our note on GST updates for 2026.

Registration thresholds
Kerala is a normal-category state, so the standard thresholds apply. Aggregate turnover is the all-India turnover under one PAN, including exempt supplies and exports.
| Situation | Registration needed? |
|---|---|
| Supplier of goods only, aggregate turnover up to ₹40 lakh, all supplies within Kerala | No |
| Supplier of goods only, aggregate turnover above ₹40 lakh | Yes |
| Supplier of services (or goods and services), aggregate turnover up to ₹20 lakh | No |
| Supplier of services, aggregate turnover above ₹20 lakh | Yes |
| Any inter-state supply of goods, whatever the turnover | Yes |
| Selling goods through an e-commerce operator such as a marketplace | Yes, in most cases |
| Person liable to pay tax under reverse charge, casual or non-resident taxable person | Yes |
The ₹40 lakh limit does not cover certain goods such as ice cream, pan masala and tobacco products. Businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore (goods) or ₹50 lakh (services) can consider the composition scheme; we compare the options with you.
Compliance calendar
The usual dates for a regular taxpayer in Kerala. The portal and CBIC notifications can extend them, so we track each change.
GST 2.0 rates
From 22 September 2025 the four main slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) were rationalised. We check the rate and HSN code on every product line when we take on a new client.
Unbranded staples, fresh produce, health and education services and other notified exemptions
Most essential goods and many items earlier taxed at 12%, plus notified services
Most goods and services, including many items earlier taxed at 28%
Luxury and sin goods such as certain high-end vehicles and tobacco-related products
Special rates still apply to gold, silver and precious stones. The 57th GST Council meeting (8 October 2026) made further recommendations that had not been notified when this page was reviewed; we apply changes only once CBIC notifies them.
Our process
Step01
We review your registration, the last 12 months of returns and your GSTR-2B to find gaps, wrong rates or missed credit before we start filing.
Step02
You share sales and purchase data from Tally, Zoho or your ERP by an agreed date each month; we chase missing invoices.
Step03
We match purchases with GSTR-2B, act on IMS (accept, reject or keep pending), and list suppliers whose invoices are missing.
Step04
We prepare GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, send you a summary with the tax payable and credit claimed, and file only after your approval.
Step05
At year end we reconcile GST with the books and tax audit, then file GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C by 31 December.

Be return-ready
For a new registration, and for monthly filing, these are the records we ask for:
ITC reconciliation
Under section 16(2)(aa) of the CGST Act, you can claim input tax credit only if your supplier has reported the invoice and it appears in your GSTR-2B. The Invoice Management System (IMS) now lets you accept, reject or keep each invoice pending before GSTR-2B is generated, and the credit flows into GSTR-3B on that basis.
In practice, the mismatches come from suppliers who file late, report the wrong GSTIN, or charge IGST instead of CGST and SGST. We reconcile every month, not just at year end, so that missed credit is followed up while the supplier can still correct it. We also watch the other conditions: payment to the supplier within 180 days, blocked credits under section 17(5), and the time limit for claiming credit (30 November after the year end, or the annual return if filed earlier).
Worked example
A building-materials distributor in Ernakulam, filing monthly returns, received a notice for excess input tax credit of about ₹6.8 lakh compared with GSTR-2B for one financial year.
The proceedings closed with only the admitted reversal and interest paid. The client now gets a monthly supplier mismatch report so the issue does not recur.
Notices and appeals
Most notices now come from automated return comparisons: GSTR-1 against GSTR-3B, GSTR-3B against GSTR-2B, or GST turnover against your income tax return. A clear, documented reply at the scrutiny stage (ASMT-10) often avoids a show cause notice altogether.
For FY 2024-25 onwards, demands are raised under the single section 74A, with lower penalties where there is no fraud or suppression. If an order goes against you, a first appeal lies to the Appellate Authority within three months, with a pre-deposit of 10% of the disputed tax. A further appeal lies to the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT), which started accepting appeals online from 24 September 2025, with an additional pre-deposit. We draft the grounds, compute the pre-deposit, and represent you at the hearings.
Fees and timing
There is no standard rate card. Our fee depends on the number of GSTINs and states, the volume of invoices and suppliers, whether you file monthly or under QRMP, whether e-invoicing, exports or refunds are involved, and the condition of past returns. Notices and appeals are quoted separately, based on the amount and the issues involved. We agree a fixed fee in writing after reviewing your registration and recent returns. A new registration usually takes a few working days once documents are complete, longer if the officer orders physical verification.

Ask an expertFrequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions clients in Kochi ask us most. Still unsure?
Talk to our teamKerala follows the normal limits. A business supplying only goods must register when aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh in a financial year; a supplier of services, or of both goods and services, must register above ₹20 lakh. Inter-state suppliers of goods and most e-commerce sellers must register regardless of turnover.
If the application is complete and Aadhaar authentication is done, registration is usually granted within about seven working days. If the officer orders physical verification of the premises or raises a clarification, it can take up to 30 days.
Monthly filers must file GSTR-3B by the 20th of the following month. Quarterly (QRMP) filers in Kerala file by the 22nd of the month after the quarter and pay tax for the first two months through PMT-06 by the 25th.
GSTR-1 reports your outward supplies invoice by invoice, which feeds your customers' GSTR-2B. GSTR-3B is the summary return in which you declare tax payable, claim input tax credit and pay the net tax.
The annual return GSTR-9 and the reconciliation statement GSTR-9C for FY 2025-26 are due by 31 December 2026. GSTR-9 is optional for taxpayers with aggregate turnover up to ₹2 crore, and GSTR-9C applies above ₹5 crore.
No. Since 2021, GSTR-9C is a self-certified reconciliation statement filed by the taxpayer. Most businesses still have it prepared by their chartered accountant because it must reconcile with the audited accounts.
Usually because some suppliers have not filed GSTR-1, filed late, or used the wrong GSTIN, so the invoices are missing from your GSTR-2B. Credit can be claimed only for invoices in GSTR-2B, so monthly reconciliation and supplier follow-up are essential.
The Invoice Management System lets recipients accept, reject or keep pending each invoice uploaded by suppliers before GSTR-2B is generated. Accepted invoices flow into your credit; rejected ones go back to the supplier for correction.
Businesses whose aggregate annual turnover has exceeded ₹5 crore in any financial year since 2017-18 must report B2B invoices to the Invoice Registration Portal. Those with turnover of ₹10 crore or more must report each invoice within 30 days of its date.
From 22 September 2025, most goods and services are taxed at 5% or 18%, with a 40% rate for luxury and sin goods. The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were largely merged into these rates, while gold and precious stones keep special rates.
Reconcile the two returns for the period, identify whether the gap is a timing difference, an amendment or a genuine short payment, and reply with the reconciliation and supporting invoices within the time given. Any admitted short payment should be paid with interest through DRC-03.
A first appeal to the Appellate Authority must be filed within three months of the order, with a pre-deposit of 10% of the disputed tax. An appeal to the GST Appellate Tribunal must be filed within three months of the first appeal order, with a further pre-deposit.
Yes. If you export under a Letter of Undertaking without paying IGST, you can claim a refund of unutilised input tax credit. If you pay IGST on export of goods, the refund is processed through the shipping bill. Refund claims must generally be filed within two years from the relevant date.
Late fee is charged per day of delay, subject to a cap, and interest at 18% a year applies on tax paid late. Continued non-filing can lead to blocking of e-way bills and suspension or cancellation of registration.
Yes. Each state needs its own GSTIN and returns, but we can file and reconcile all of them centrally from Kochi, including cross-charge and Input Service Distributor (ISD) entries between branches.
